For Seneca writings we know that in ancient Rome 'people washed their
arms and legs dirty from work every day, but washed the rest of their
body once a week or every nine days, according to the market day'.
The first public bath in Rome was certainly the river Tiber, in whose cold
waters the Romans performed their daily cleansing since childhood. Later
the river's muddy waters were considered unsanitary, and since the
middle of the III century B.C the more affluent citizens began to imitate the
Greek custom of Building a bathroom in their home.The populace instead,
continued to wash in the river or not to wash at all, since the rigid republican
thinking considered bathing outside the home a moral lassitude and was
opposed to the building of public baths.
Fortunately for Rome and for hygiene, the people did not consent and at
the beginning of the II century B.C. a few private contractors, in answer to
the ever pressing demands of the people, began to build the forst public baths
which, although modest and rather cold, offered the possibility of bathing at
a small cost. In a short time the baths ( balnea from Greek word balančidon)
become more confortable and better equipped and rapidly grew in number,
since in their enthusiastic approval the Romans threw away the republican
austerity and their own clothes, happily diving in the public tubs.
